The legend of Chimaera
Located on the cliffs north of Çıralı Beach, Yanartaş has a myth that is told in the legends of ancient Greek mythology: Hipponoes, the son of Glaukos, king of Ephyra, kills his brother Belleros in a hunting party and takes the name of Bellerophontes, which means iy Eater Belleros. Bellerophontes, exiled from Ephyra, took refuge in the king of Argos.
The king of Argos, who couldn’t bring himself to kill this young man, took him to the Lycian king.
The Lycian king does not want to kill this pitiful young man and sends him to fight with Chimera, a lion-headed, goat-bodied, snake-tailed monster that emits flames from the mouth. Bellerophontes rides his winged horse Pegassos to fight Chimera.
When Chimera attacked, Pegassos took off and Bellerophontes landed on the ground with his spear and buries the monster seven times to the ground. But Chimera continues to scatter flames from beneath the ground seven times. According to the legend that has been told in Anatolia for thousands of years and that Homer tells us in this way, the flames that are still burning are the flames of Chimera that emanate from the bottom of the earth.
In order to celebrate Bellerophontes’ victory, a race is organized in Olympos. Athletes run to the city of Olympos, igniting their torches with the Sacred Fire of Chimera. In this way, the first example of the Olympic Games in Anatolia, where various sports were added later, was realized. The ‘Olympic Torch ılan, nowadays, is a symbolic expression of Chimera’s everlasting fire.
Sea Turtle, Caretta Caretta
Lives in the seas. She never goes ashore except to lay eggs. The back side is reddish brown and the underside is whitish light yellow.
The legs are paddled to swim and have a maximum of 2 tabs on the outer edges. Although it takes oxygen from the air, it may remain submerged for a long time. They bury their eggs in the pits they opened on the beaches at night. Can lay 100 eggs at a time (up to 162 identified).
After the incubation period of 2 months, the hatchlings go out of the egg at night and go to the sea.
Spread over the Mediterranean coast. The most important spawning regions are Belek, Çıralı, Anamur, Köyceğiz, Dalyan coasts. Shell lengths can grow up to 1 meter. It feeds on fish, crustaceans and aquatic organisms (especially seaweeds).
It is thought that they have been on earth for about 105 million years. Due to the settling and proliferation capacity of human beings, their numbers are decreasing today. It is protected because it is in danger of extinction.
Reproduction and Protection Activities in Çıralı
The width of the Çıralı Beach, which is 3.2 km long, varies between 50-100 m. Rising from the coast with a soft slope, Çıralı Beach is bordered by Olympos in the south and rocky Karaburun in the north. The beach is also an important breeding area for the sea turtles in the Mediterranean Sea. Wildlife Protection Society of Turkey since 1994 in this region carries out monitoring and conservation efforts for sea turtles.
During these studies, all exits identified in Çıralı Beach belong to Caretta Caretta. Field work is carried out by checking the beach twice a day, night and morning, and recording the data. Night observations are made between 23: 00-03: 00 and morning observations are between 05: 30-09: 00.
During the night observations, adult female and nest recordings are taken, and in the morning observations, data on offspring and nest control are recorded.
Turkey continues to systematically covered in Coastal Management and Tourism Projects for locals and visitors for awareness and information activities have yielded positive results. Particularly during the reproduction period, in order to prevent the entry of vehicles to the beach, parking lots were established in certain parts of the coast with Ulupınar Mukhtar’s Headquarters.
The difficulties encountered at the beginning of the study were gradually overcome and a certain success was achieved. Informative and warning signs were placed on the whole shore, and informative documents and posters were regularly placed on the beach before the season.
The chairs and umbrellas were arranged and the lights were curtained by talking to the owners and operators of the restaurants on the beach. During the night observations, people who encountered light on the beach and made noise, which caused the sea turtles to shiver, were informed about the study and their disturbing behavior was prevented.
In Çıralı Elementary School, children were given information about sea turtles in the Environmental Education classes, which were regularly given to the village children, and the children were allowed to participate in field studies with volunteers.
Sea turtle population identification and conservation studies in Çıralı Beach have been carried out in cooperation with BTCV (British Trust for Conservation Volunteers) since 1998.
These studies will be continued in the following years within the framework of a monitoring program. Çıralı, with its natural values it preserves, is an alternative for other sea turtle breeding areas in Antalya region which has been destroyed due to increasing tourism investments.
You can observe the caretta caretta which is under protection in Çıralı coast between April and July at night and close to morning. After the incubation period of 60 days after the laying date of the caretta caretta, the hatchlings hatch.
